The next evening as they walked to the harbor, the women rehashed the meeting they’d had with Brenda.

“Like I said last night, Brenda didn’t know who the married man was who Elana was supposedly seeing.” Nadine rolled her eyes. “And after we questioned her, she admitted that Elana never mentioned dating a married man. Brenda was simply speculating based on … well, nothing, really.”

“Brenda pointed to Elana being evasive at times about who she was getting together with,” Jen noted. “That doesn’t mean she was dating a married man. Maybe Elana just wanted a little privacy and didn’t want to divulge to Brenda every single thing she was doing. If Brenda treated Elana as nastily as some people have reported, I wouldn’t tell Brenda much about my life or activities either. I wouldn’t put it past her to try and cause some trouble for Elana, or any other of her supposed friends. It seems the woman has a mean streak.”

“It must just be her character and personality,” Peggy pointed out. “Maybe she had a difficult upbringing. Things might have been hard for her.”

Nadine smiled. “Ever the compassionate one. I need to be more like you, but I’m a lost cause.”

Jen said, “Well, if someone had a hard childhood, that doesn’t give a person free rein to be rotten to others. A hard early life is a reason that someone might struggle, but it’s not an excuse to be mean to other people.”

“Well said.” Nadine nodded. “I picked up so much negative energy from Brenda. I’m sure you two did as well.”

“I did. I couldn’t wait to be done with the interview,” Peggy admitted.

“She’s one of those people you just don’t want to be around.” Jen sighed. “I’m not looking forward to this meeting either, but for a different reason.”

“Yes,” Peggy said. “I dreaded going to speak with Brenda because of all the things we’d heard about her. Now, I’m dreading meeting with Elana’s mother. We have no news to report. Just the same old information that’s always been out there. I’ll be so sorry to disappoint her.”

“We’re not done investigating yet.” When Nadine shook her head, her long brown hair moved lazily over her shoulders. “I’m not throwing in the towel. We’ll get there. We just need more time.”

The woman’s words brought smiles to Jen and Peggy.

“That’s what I needed to hear.” Peggy rubbed her friend’s arm.

“This is the best friendship,” Jen told them. “Whenever we start to feel down about something, one of us always says something to lift us up.”

The three strolled down the stone walkway to the restaurant’s outdoor deck that looked out over the ocean, and they saw Jessie Baker sitting at a table waiting for them. When they approached, Jessie stood and gave each woman a quick hug.

“I ordered a drink already.” Jessie lifted her glass. “I’ve been feeling nervous about meeting you.”

Peggy replied, “It’s still very early in the investigation. We’ve gathered some details, but they’re probably things you’ve heard already.”

“We need to gather the preliminary stuff in order to be able to dig deeper.
